Scottish Country Dance Instruction

CAL TAIS (J8x48) 3C (4C set) Babbs+Gain

1- 8 1s set, turn RH 1½ times and cast 2 places opposite side
9-16 3s+1s set and dance ½ RH across, 2s+1s set and dance ½ RH across
17-24 1s cross down to 3rd place and dance reels of 3 on own sides (1s out and up, 3s in and down to start) and 1s turn LH to face 3rd corners
25-32 1s turn 3rd corners RH, partner LH, 4th corner RH and partner LH to face 3rd corner
33-40 1s dance ½ diagonal reel with 3rd corners and ½ diagonal reel with 4th corners
41-48 3s+1s+2s circle 6H round and back to end 312
2nd time through, ends 3412, 1s step to bottom and 3s become new 1s

Dance Information

"Cal tais" means "Soft kail" in Gaelic; it should be pronounced as "Kahl tah~sh" in English, where:
  "ah" is pronounced as in "shah";
  "~" represents the very short, indeterminate, vowel sound; and
  "sh" is pronounced as in "shot".
