Scottish Country Dancing Dictionary

Double Left Hands Across

In Double left hands across Couples Face anticlockwise and Dance Left hands Across as, for example, in bars 13-16 of The Eightsome Reel.

The formal RSCDS style for this Scottish Country Dance Figure requires the Couples' Nearer hands to be joined; since the outer dancers have to Travel much further than in ordinary Left hands Across, the full Figure takes the dancers only half way round the circle in 4 bars.

Note that in the informal style (for a Quick tempo dance only), the Man puts his arm (the free arm if he is on the inside or his inside arm if he is on the outside) behind his Partner with his hand on her waist.
