Scottish Country Dancing Dictionary

5-Couple Square Set

There are a few examples of this Scottish Country Dancing format, the 5 couple square set, in which the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th couples are initially as in the 4 couple square set format and the 5th couple is in the Centre of The set; all five Couples are involved throughout and there is usually Progression. The 5th couple, who are the Dancing couple, normally Start Facing each other, sometimes in a line Up and down The set, as in Gavin's Reel, sometimes Across the set as in Fisherman's Reel.

At the end of five Repeats, the Dancers are normally back in their Original Places though in one example, Spiffin', the whole Set Finishes rotated one Place clockwise.

See Alternative Dance Selections for lists of those dances in rarer formats of The set, such as this, for which a crib or a crib diagram is available on this site.
