Brunette d'Écosse - Scottish Country Dancing Instruction VideoDance Information
This strathspey, Brunette d'Écosse, was devised by Ann Dix for Lindsey and Philippe Rousseau. The deviser notes tell us that 'brunette' is a French song form which came into existence at about the same time as the strathspey became a form of dance (that is, the early 18th century).
The brunette could be performed instrumentally as well as vocally.
The term brunette could have been replaced by others, such as romance or air, by the 1760s as Rousseau's Dictionnaire de Musique (published 1768) does not contain the word brunette.
