Dance Information

This strathspey was devised for the birthday of a Scottish country dance teacher, Mary Prentice.

The name was changed from "A Candle For Mary" to "By Candlelight" at the request of the lady in question, but after the dance, with its original name, had been circulated. It appears that the dance has retained both names.

Mary Prentice founded the Dunblane Hydro Scottish Country Dance Club in 1962. The club left the Hydro in April 1990 and then, after using a few other premises until 1995, it settled in to the Albert Hall, Stirling.

The move from the Hydro required a club name change. The "Martice Scottish Country Dance Club" was chosen, inspired by Mary's name, Mar(y Pren)tice.

The Martice Scottish Country Dance Club maintained a full programme of dancing activities until the evening of Monday, 11th March 2024 - the last night of Martice club dancing, held in the Albert Hall in Stirling, to a great programme and the sound of Marian Anderson's Band.
