Dance Information

This dance was possibly inspired by The Highland Fair, Or, Union of the Clans: A ballad opera by Joseph Mitchell performed at the Theatre-Royal, in Drury Lane, London, by His Majesty's Servants in 1731.

The opera was based on Scots tunes although there is little evidence to suggest that the tunes are all of Highland origin, or indeed whether Mitchell had ever even visited the Scottish Highlands.

Joseph Mitchell (1684-1738) also presented Fatal Extravagance, a 1721 tragedy penned by the British writer Aaron Hill at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre in London, and Poems On Several Occasions printed for the author and sold by J. Catterns in 1732.
