Kelburn is a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand, situated on elevated ground just west of the city centre.
It lies within walking distance of the central business district and is connected by the Wellington Cable Car, which opened in 1902 to provide direct access from Lambton Quay to the hilltop.
The suburb began development in the late 19th century, named after Viscount Kelburn. Its layout and growth were shaped by the terrain, with residential streets following the contours of the hills. The area includes one of the earliest examples of a reinforced concrete road viaduct in the country, built to link Kelburn with Karori and other western suburbs.
Victoria University of Wellington's main campus is located in Kelburn. Among its buildings is the Hunter Building, completed in 1906 and used for administrative and academic purposes. The suburb also contains a university marae, library, and various lecture facilities.
Close to the top of the cable car route are several attractions. These include a planetarium, an observatory, and a museum dedicated to the cable car itself. The Botanic Garden is nearby, offering walking paths and areas of native bush and cultivated plantings.
Kelburn has a compact local centre around Upland Road with small shops, cafés and community services. The surrounding residential area is home to a mix of long-term residents, university staff, and students.
