Kinfauns Castle is a 19th-century castellated mansion situated near Perth, Scotland, within the parish of Kinfauns in Perth and Kinross.Designed by architect Sir Robert Smirke, the castle was constructed between 1822 and 1826 for Francis Gray, 14th Lord Gray, on the site of a former medieval stronghold. The building features Gothic architectural elements, including battlements, towers, and turrets, and is positioned on a raised terrace overlooking the River Tay. It is recognised as a Category A listed building, denoting its national significance, and the surrounding grounds are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland.
The estate's history traces back to the early 14th century when Thomas de Longueville, a French knight who joined Robert the Bruce, was granted lands east of Perth following the capture of the city in 1313. De Longueville married the heiress of the Charteris family and adopted their name, establishing the Charteris lineage at Kinfauns. The original castle served as the family seat until the property passed through marriage to the Gray family in 1741. Subsequent ownership included the Stuart Earls of Moray, who acquired the estate in 1878. In the 20th century, the estate underwent various changes, including the sale of much of the land by Scottish Estates Ltd after 1930. The castle is currently occupied by Scottish businesswoman Ann Gloag.
The castle's designed landscape encompasses approximately 152 hectares (376 acres), extending north to Deuchny Wood, south to the A85, west to the woodlands on Kinnoull Hill, and east to the woodland on Binn Hill. A 19th-century account described the site as one of 'singular and romantic grandeur'.
In 1847, during the development of the Dundee and Perth Railway, Lord Gray permitted the railway line to traverse his estate for a fee of £12,000, a substantial sum at the time.
The name 'Kinfauns Castle' was also bestowed upon a Union-Castle Line steamer launched in 1899. The vessel served as an armed merchant cruiser and troopship during the First World War before returning to civilian service.
