Leaving Benbecula - Scottish Country Dancing Instruction VideoDance Information
This dance was dedicated to the late Sheila Jupp, who spent several early years living on the island; it has also been known as Return to Benbecula.Benbecula, situated in the Atlantic Ocean as part of the Outer Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland, is an island with a population of approximately 1,200. Positioned between North Uist and South Uist, it is connected to these neighbouring islands by road causeways.
In 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie found himself caught in a storm and compelled to land on Benbecula. Sympathetic to the Jacobite cause, the population of Benbecula aided his escape from the island to safety, as depicted in the folk song: "over the sea to Skye."
For travel to other major Hebridean islands or the Scottish mainland, the options are limited to air or sea transport. Benbecula Airport, the world's only tidal airport, facilitates daily flights to and from Glasgow, as well as Inverness via Stornoway.
