Dance Information

The Library of Birmingham is a public library in Birmingham, England.

It is located in Centenary Square and was officially opened on 3 September 2013 by Malala Yousafzai. Designed by the Dutch architects Mecanoo, it replaced Birmingham Central Library and is considered the largest public library in the United Kingdom. The project cost approximately £188.8 million.

The library's design features a distinctive appearance with interlocking metal rings covering its glass facade. It has ten levels, including a lower ground floor and two rooftop terraces. The building houses over a million books and includes special collections, such as the Shakespeare Memorial Room, which dates back to 1882 and was relocated from the old Central Library.

The Library of Birmingham is part of the Birmingham City Council's library services and provides access to books, archives, digital resources, and study spaces. It was intended to serve as a cultural hub and improve literacy and learning in the city.

The building incorporates environmental features such as natural ventilation, greywater recycling, and energy-efficient lighting. It was designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, reflecting its sustainability credentials. The library also includes a performance area, gallery space, and facilities for community events.

Since its opening, the Library of Birmingham has received both praise and criticism. It has been recognised for its architectural significance and public engagement, but concerns have been raised about the costs associated with its construction and maintenance. Despite financial challenges, it remains a key cultural institution in Birmingham.
