Dance Information

Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England, with a 2022 population of 568,996.

Part of the UK's third-most populous metropolitan area, housing 2.92 million people, it is bordered by the Cheshire Plain to the south, the Pennines to the north and east, and Salford to the west, along with neighbouring boroughs such as Trafford, Stockport, and Oldham.

Manchester's history began with the Roman fort of Mamucium, established around AD 79 near the rivers Medlock and Irwell. Remaining a manorial township through the Middle Ages, it expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, driven by a textile boom, becoming the world's first industrialised city. Historically part of Lancashire, parts of Cheshire, including Wythenshawe, were incorporated in the 20th century.

Gaining city status in 1853, Manchester saw major developments like the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894. After post-war decline and a 1996 IRA bombing, extensive regeneration followed, culminating in hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
