Dance Information
The Mourne Mountains, (also called the Mournes or the Mountains of Mourne), are a granite mountain range in County Down in the south-east of Northern Ireland. The Mountains Of Mourne (originally spelt The Mountains O' Mourne) is also the subject of The Mountains Of Mourne - Song written by the Irish musician Percy French (1854-1920). The music for the song was adapted by Houston Collisson (1865-1920) from the traditional Irish folk tune "Carrigdonn" or "Carrigdhoun".
Oh, Mary, this London's a wonderful sight,
With people all working by day and by night.
Sure, they don't sow potatoes, nor barley, nor wheat,
But there's gangs of them digging for gold in the street.
At least when I asked them that's what I was told,
So I just took a hand at this digging for gold,
But for all that I found there I might as well be
Where the Mountains o' Mourne sweep down to the sea.
The song whimsically explores the styles, attitudes, and fashions of late nineteenth-century London through the eyes of an emigrant laborer from a village near the Mourne Mountains.
