The two titles originally referred to different tunes. "Off She Goes" appeared in Thomas Calvert's collection of Scottish dance music around 1799, while Campbell's 1804 publication used the combined title "Off She Goes, or Follow Her Over The Borders" for the melody of "Follow Her Over The Border". Campbell published the separate "Off She Goes" tune in his next collection, around 1805.

The separate melody "Off She Goes", rather than necessarily the tune used for Campbell's dance, was played at fashionable balls during the early nineteenth century, including events hosted by the Duke of Clarence in 1806 and the Prince Regent in 1813. This melody was also used for the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty", although the date at which the words and tune were first combined is uncertain.
