1- 8 1M leading 2M+3M also 3L leading 2L+1L chase clockwise ½ round to opposite sides (4 bars). All set, 1s+3s turn partners ¾ RH into line up/down (Men facing down)
9-12 3s+1s dance ½ reel of 4. Bar 12: 1M+3L pass LSH to face 2s (1M+2M and 3L+2L facing), 1L+3M remain in centre at top/bottom
13-16 1M+3L+2s dance ½ reel of 4 across. Bar 16: 1M and 3L pass LSh to face partners up/down set
17-24 1s+3s dance ½ reel of 4, 1M+3L pass LSh to face own partners. 3s+1s set, Petronella turn to own sides. 321
25-32 2s followed by 1s dance up to top, cast, 2s to 3rd place, 1s to 2nd place (4 bars). 3s+1s+2s turn partners 2H

  1-4   All chase clockwise halfway, finishing 3s2s1s on opposite sides;

  5-6   3s2s1s take hands on the sides and set;

  7-8   3s 1s turn ¾ by the right, finishing on the centre line, Mn facing down, Ls up;

  9-12 3s1s half reel of 4 on the centre line, 3L 1M finishing left shoulder to left shoulder on the first corners' diagonal, 3L facing 2L, 1M facing 2M;

13-16 2L3L1M2M half reel of 4 across, 3L 1M finishing left shoulder to left shoulder on the second corners' diagonal, facing partners;

17-20 1s3s half reel of 4 up and down the centre line, finishing 3M3L1M1L on the centre line, facing partners;

21-24 3s 1s set facing partners and petronella turn to own sides;

25-28 2s followed by 1s take nearer hands, lead to the top and cast to finish 3s1s2s;

29-32 3s 1s 2s turn both hands.

Dance Notes

  1-4   Follow the rectilinear shape of the set.

  9-20 These half reels of 4 are the same as ¾ of those in the original version of Mairi's Wedding but rotated by 45° so that the axes are on the centre line and across the set rather than on the corners' diagonals. 3L1M are the "dancing couple", always passing left shoulder in the centre.

20-20 1M 3L must move a little more quickly to pass each other completely and so finish on the centre line, facing partners.

This dance was inspired by the renowned orchards of Portadown in County Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Portadown (from Irish Port an Dúnáin 'landing place of the little fort') is a town in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The town sits on the River Bann in the north of the county, about 24 mi (39 km) southwest of Belfast.
