The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel is a species of tree squirrel, an arboreal, omnivorous rodent common throughout Eurasia. The red squirrel has drastically reduced in number in the United Kingdom, after the grey squirrels were introduced from North America in the 1870s.
Fewer than 140,000 individuals are thought to be left in 2013, approximately 85% of which are in Scotland, with the Isle of Wight being the largest haven in England.
