Dance Information

The Voortrekker Monument is a prominent historical and cultural landmark located just south of Pretoria in South Africa. This massive granite structure is prominently located on a hilltop, and was raised to commemorate the Voortrekkers, early Dutch pioneers who embarked on the Great Trek during the 1830s and 1840s, seeking to escape British colonial rule in the Cape Colony.

Designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk, the Voortrekker Monument is characterized by its distinctive architectural features, including a massive granite structure with a central cenotaph and surrounding marble friezes depicting key events from the Great Trek. The monument serves as a symbol of Afrikaner nationalism and the struggle for independence.

Inside the monument, visitors can explore a historical museum that provides insights into the Voortrekkers' journey, their encounters with indigenous peoples, and the broader historical context of the time. The building also houses a vast marble frieze, created by artist Anton van Wouw, depicting scenes of triumph and hardship faced by the Voortrekkers.
