1- 12 2s and 4s dance ½ diagonal R&L for 3 couples 3 times (polite turns) to end 5(2)3(4)1
13-16 All advance and retire (1 step each) twice
17-24 3s+[2s+5s]+[4s+1s] following dance Tandem reels of 3 on sides (3s RSh to [2s+5s] to start). (2)531(4)
25-28 All set, 2s (at top) and 4s (at bottom) cross RH while 3s (middle) turn RH once round
29-32 3s cast 1 place (1s step up) and all set. 25134

32-bar strathspey for five couples in a five-couple longwise set

1 - 12 2nd and 4th couples dance half rights and lefts on the diagonal three times with polite turns, to finish in the order 52341, 2nd and 4th couples being on the opposite sides (2nd, 3rd and 4th couples are back to second, third and fourth places, 1st and 5th couples have exchanged places).
13 - 16 All advance and retire (one step) twice.
17 - 24 3rd couple (in the middle) dance up into right shoulder reels of three on the sides with two tandems: 2nd couple followed by 5th couple at the top and 4th couple followed by 1st couple at the bottom, to finish in the order 25314 (there's no lead change in the tandems so that 5th and 2nd couples have changed places, as well as 4th and 1st couples).
25 - 28 All set, then 2nd and 4th couples (top and bottom couples), giving right hands, cross over, while 3rd couple (in third place) turn once round with the right hands.
29 - 32 3rd couple cast off one place as 1st couple step up and all set. Final order 25134.

Repeat from new positions.

Dance Information

This reel, The Walnut Pie, was devised in February 2018.

Another dance with rights and lefts on the diagonal, more difficult, but suitable if there are just five couples of dancers.

Walnut pie is a pie prepared with walnuts as a primary ingredient. Whole or chopped walnuts may be used, or both, and toasted walnuts may also be used.
