What's New Pussycat? is a 1965 screwball comedy film directed by Clive Donner, written by Woody Allen in his first produced screenplay, and starring Allen in his acting debut, along with Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Romy Schneider, Capucine, Paula Prentiss, and Ursula Andress. The expression "what's new pussycat?" arose from Charles Feldman, the Producer, overhearing Warren Beatty, who was originally playing the lead role, answering the phone to a girlfriend and saying 'what's up pussycat. In the film, Michael (O'Toole) calls all women "Pussycat" to avoid having to remember their names.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Romy Schneider, Capucine, and Paula Prentiss. Woody Allen also appears in a supporting role, marking his first foray into writing for the screen.
The film is known for its zany plot centered around Michael James (played by O'Toole), a man with commitment issues seeking therapy to overcome his womanizing ways. The comedic chaos ensues as he navigates various romantic entanglements.
Adding to the film's charm is the catchy and iconic theme song, "What's New Pussycat?", performed by Tom Jones. The song, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, became a major hit and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Tom Jones's energetic rendition of the song is closely associated with the film and contributed to its overall popularity.
With its blend of humour, star-studded cast, and memorable theme song, "What's New Pussycat?" remains a notable entry in the realm of 1960s screwball comedies.
