Scottish Country Dancing Dictionary

Hornpipes

A few dances, mainly with a nautical association in the name, are categorized as Hornpipes though the only differentiation from a 4/4 tempo Reel is in the distinctive rhythm.

In some classifications, notably MiniCrib, these are not differentiated from Reels.

Here are examples of those Scottish Country Dances for which we have instructions on this site and in which the term, Hornpipes, either appears explicitly or is implied; note that for a common term these will be a small selection; for a rare term, these may be all that exist:

Angus MacKinnon's Hornpipe
Burns' Hornpipe
Cape Breton Hornpipe
College Hornpipe
Lakeside Kelpie Hornpipe
Royal Navy Hornpipe
Sailor
Sound of Harris
Thousand Islands Hornpipe
West's Hornpipe
