Open Grip
Sometimes called Slow turn grip, Open grip is the formal Hold used for a Turn by the right or By the left in both Strathspeys and Quick tempo dances provided ample Time is available. As the Scottish Country Dancers approach, the hands should first be Gripped as for shaking hands and raised to shoulder height; then, the dancers proceed round each other at arm's length, making their paths longer and so using up the prescribed music more elegantly.
It is particularly appropriate when less than a full Turn is prescribed.
