Scottish Country Dancing Dictionary

To Retire, Dance backwards, away from the dancer you are Facing.

The Figure may involve one Scottish Country Dancer or a line of dancers, with the Facing dancer(s) either stationary or, more commonly, also Retiring. Two bars are normally allocated for this Figure.

When qualified by a Place in The set, the term is sometimes used to indicate the Finishing Position.

See also Advance and retire and also Set advancing and retire under Setting.

Here are examples of those Scottish Country Dances for which we have instructions on this site and in which the term, Retire, either appears explicitly or is implied; note that for a common term these will be a small selection; for a rare term, these may be all that exist:

Entente Florale
Major Erskine Of Edinburgh
