Slow Turn
The Slow turn uses the Open grip; it is the standard form when adequate Time is available and is important as a means of using up the Time when more than enough is prescribed. In bars 5-8 of Mairi's Wedding, the Slow turn is an extreme contrast to the Quick turn in bars 1-2. It is most important to recognize that the Hold for bars 5-8 in that dance is completely different from that in bars 1-2. A similar situation can arise with Turn corner, partner, corner, partner when the subsequent Figure requires the final Turn to be of much less extent than the three previous Turns.
Here are examples of those Scottish Country Dances for which we have instructions on this site and in which the term, Slow turn, either appears explicitly or is implied; note that for a common term these will be a small selection; for a rare term, these may be all that exist:
Atlantic Crossing
Beeswing
Haste Ye Back
Miss Gibson's Strathspey
Miss Milligan's Strathspey
