Scottish Country Dancing Dictionary

Travelling

This Travelling section covers those Figures in which dancers proceed within and around The set, usually two or three side by side and usually Taking hands in one or other of the standard Holds. Sometimes they Face other Scottish Country Dancers who perform the mirror image movement; a few movements of the same type for individual dancers are included.

The term is also used to refer to any movement using a Travelling Step in Reels, Chains and so on. The Figures in this section almost all use the appropriate Travelling Step, i.e., Skip change or the Strathspey travelling step; a few use Slip step.

Figures using Setting steps for Travelling are covered in the section Setting, with a separate entry in this section if the Figure also has a form using a Travelling Step, for example, Petronella turn.
