A clootie, also spelled cloutie, is a Scottish term derived from "cloot", meaning a piece of cloth, rag or garment.The word is also used for fabric employed in mending clothes or making traditional rag rugs, often known as clootie mats.
A clootie dumpling is a traditional Scottish pudding made from flour, suet, dried fruit, sugar, spices and milk, with some recipes also including treacle or golden syrup. The ingredients are mixed into a dough, wrapped in a floured cloth, and boiled or simmered for several hours before being dried beside a fire or in an oven.
Recipes differ across Scotland. In North Fife and Dundee, for example, breadcrumbs are often omitted, while treacle is commonly added.
The term "clootie dumpling" has also been used as a nickname for the logo of the Scottish National Party.
