Dance Information

Dr William Windley, the second great-uncle of the deviser of this dance, Reggie Thomson, worked as a general practitioner in the village of Colston Bassett.

In 1913, he created the Colston Bassett Stilton, a cheese that would become well known. This Scottish Country dance was named in his honour.

Colston Bassett, situated in Nottinghamshire's Vale of Belvoir, is renowned for its dairy heritage, particularly the production of Stilton cheese. Established in 1913, the local dairy is one of only five authorised to produce this distinguished blue cheese. In addition to Blue Stilton, the dairy crafts White Stilton and Shropshire Blue, contributing to the village's esteemed reputation in artisanal cheese-making.

The village's name, first documented as "Coletone" in the Domesday Book, originates from the Old Norse personal name "Kolr" combined with the Old English "tūn", meaning farm or village. The suffix "Bassett" was added in the 12th century, derived from Ralph Bassett, a judge appointed by Henry I.
