The early baby boomers form the first part of the baby boomer generation, a demographic group created by the sharp rise in birth rates that occurred after the Second World War.
In many studies and official statistics, the overall baby boomer generation includes people born between 1946 and 1964, a period during which births increased markedly in several industrialised countries.
Within this broader generation, researchers commonly divide the group into two sections. The earlier section, sometimes called the leading-edge or early baby boomers, includes those born roughly between 1946 and 1955. Individuals in this cohort grew up during the years of post-war economic expansion and reached adulthood during the 1960s and early 1970s. Their formative years coincided with major social and political developments, including the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War in the United States.
The early baby boomers represent slightly more than half of the entire baby boomer population in the United States. Members of this group were the first to experience the demographic effects of the large post-war birth surge that followed the economic recovery after the Great Depression and the end of the war. The rapid increase in births during these years produced one of the largest generational cohorts of the twentieth century.
Later members of the baby boomer generation, sometimes described as late or trailing-edge boomers, were born from the mid-1950s until 1964. Because they grew up during different economic and political conditions, the two halves of the generation are sometimes distinguished when analysing social or demographic trends.
