Dance Information

Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a commune in the southeastern French department of Vaucluse; however, Erika Ritzau named this dance after the spring of the same name, which is the source of the River Sorgue.

Fontaine-de-Vaucluse lies between Saumane-de-Vaucluse and Lagnes, near L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, at the foot of the Vaucluse Mountains.

The name Vaucluse itself comes from the Latin phrase vallis clausa or "closed valley".

It is one of the largest springs in the world by water flow, with an average discharge of 22 cubic metres per second. The spring emerges at the base of a 230-metre-high limestone cliff and is fed by a vast underground reservoir, primarily replenished by rain and snowmelt from the surrounding Provençal mountains.

The source of the spring is among the deepest in the world. In 1985, divers reached a depth of 315 metres (1,033 feet) but did not find the bottom. The spring's turquoise waters have inspired many writers and artists and are the namesake of the French word "Vauclusian spring", used to describe similar karst springs.
