Dance Information

Frog in the Middle is a traditional children's game that has been played for generations in playgrounds and open spaces.

The activity involves a group of players forming a circle or marked area, with one child designated as the "frog" standing in the centre. The remaining participants attempt to pass a ball or other object around the circle without allowing the frog to intercept it. If the frog succeeds in catching or touching the ball, the player responsible for the pass usually exchanges places and becomes the new frog. The game continues in this way, ensuring constant movement and engagement among all participants.

The origins of Frog in the Middle are linked to simple chasing and catching games that have long been part of childhood play across cultures. Its enduring popularity lies in its accessibility, requiring no equipment beyond a ball and enough space for safe play. The rules are easily adapted to suit different group sizes and ages, making it a versatile activity for schools and community gatherings. The game develops coordination, quick reactions, and teamwork, while also encouraging social interaction.

Rhyme, by Gertrude Heath

Oh, the Doggie and the Froggie and the Pig!
They said, Oh, we will dance a friendly jig-
By the pale moons light
We will dance all night,
With a jiggy-jig, jiggetty - jig!
