The Glengarry Homestead - Scottish Country Dancing Instruction VideoDance Information
Australia has many locations named Glengarry. One in the Gippsland region of Victoria and another in the Launceston region of Tasmania, but The Glengarry Homestead after which this dance was named was located near Moonyoonooka, about 25km east of Geraldton in western Australia. This City Of Greater Geraldton Municipal Inventory Of Heritage Places probably gives the best overview of the history of the Glengarry Homestead which was the venue for the inaugural Glengarry Scottish Games in August 1995.
There are also some great images to be found on Monsignor John Hawes Historical Homesteads Tour October 2021 Report.
A homestead is an isolated dwelling, especially a farmhouse, and adjacent outbuildings, typically on a large agricultural holding such as a ranch or station.
In Australia, the term "homestead" typically denotes the main residence of the owner along with the accompanying structures on a pastoral property.
These properties, referred to as stations, encompass expansive tracts of land utilized primarily for livestock production, primarily focusing on cattle or sheep. Given the extensive grazing requirements, stations necessitate vast land holdings.
Moonyoonooka is a rural locality on the eastern margin of Geraldton, in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It contains Geraldton Airport. At the 2016 census, Moonyoonooka had a population of 245.
Moonyoonooka is the site of Glengarry Homestead, the birthplace of Edith Cowan, the first Australian woman to serve as a member of parliament.
Edith Dircksey Cowan OBE (born Edith Brown; August 2, 1861 - June 9, 1932) was an Australian social reformer dedicated to advancing the rights and well-being of women and children, notably recognized as the first Australian woman to hold a parliamentary seat (1921). Since 1995, the year this dance was devised, Cowan has been commemorated on the reverse side of Australia's fifty-dollar note.
