Dance Information
This dance was Devised by Judy Valvona to celebrate the Isle of Wight Caledonian Society's Platinum Anniversary in 2022.Golden Hill Fort was a defensible barracks in Freshwater, Isle of Wight, England. It was made as a barracks as part of the defenses planned by the 1859 Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom. The fort was built to have people who could defend the western end of the Isle of Wight. It had a hexagonal shape, housed 8 officers and 128 men, and even had its own hospital.
The Fort is an important local place that stands out in a good spot, giving a view over much of the land toward Afton Down in the south. When it was in use, the area around it was kept free of plants so people could see out to the Solent. The name "Golden Hill" doesn't come from the beautiful golden flowers of the European gorse but from the name of a person who used to own the land named Gauden.
