The title of this dance refers to the Mairi's Wedding - Song, originally written in Gaelic by John Roderick Bannerman in 1934 for Mary C. MacNiven after she won the gold medal at the National Mòd.The song was later given English words by Sir Hugh Roberton and became widely known as Mairi's Wedding. Mary MacNiven was a Gaelic singer from Islay, and Bannerman wrote the song in celebration of her success.
