The RSCDS records Jessie's Hornpipe as having been collected in Angus and Perthshire, Scotland.

Earlier dances bearing the same name are known, including versions published in 1827 and about 1872, but their figures differ from those of the RSCDS dance and its original source remains unknown.

The recommended tune for the dance is The Ton, which appeared in James Aird's Fourth Collection in 1794.
