Dance Information

Katoomba is the principal town and administrative centre of the City of Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia.

Located approximately 102 kilometres west of Sydney's central business district, it sits at an elevation of 1,017 metres. As of the 2021 census, the population was 8,268.

The name 'Katoomba' is derived from an Aboriginal term meaning 'shining falling water' or 'water tumbling over hill'. This refers to a waterfall that descends into the Jamison Valley. The area was previously known as William's Chimney and Collett's Swamp. In 1874, it was called The Crushers due to a nearby quarry. The name Katoomba was adopted in 1877, and the town achieved municipality status in 1889.

Katoomba is situated on both the Great Western Highway and the Main Western railway line. The Katoomba railway station, opened in 1874 as 'The Crushers', was renamed in 1877. It is served by the Blue Mountains Line and the weekly Outback Xplorer service between Sydney and Broken Hill. The town is also accessible via the Great Western Highway. Katoomba Airfield, located approximately 11.5 kilometres from the town centre, is currently closed to aircraft but remains available for emergency services.

Katoomba is a base for bushwalking and nature exploration in the surrounding Blue Mountains. Notable attractions include the Three Sisters rock formation, Echo Point, and the Giant Stairway. The town is home to the Carrington Hotel, a heritage-listed building constructed between 1882 and 1913, and Lilianfels, a former villa built in 1889, now operating as a luxury hotel.

Significant heritage-listed sites in Katoomba include the Katoomba railway station, the Carrington Hotel, and Lilianfels. These sites reflect the town's historical development and architectural heritage.

Katoomba experiences an oceanic climate, with mild summers and cool winters. The average maximum temperature is 17.6°C, and the average minimum is 8.3°C. Annual rainfall averages 1,309.2 millimetres.
