King's Coronation - Scottish Country Dancing Instruction VideoDance Information
The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla occurred on Saturday, 6 May 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London. This marked the first British coronation since Queen Elizabeth II's in 1953. Charles ascended to the throne on 8 September 2022, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The ceremony was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and followed an Anglican service of Holy Communion. Key elements included the King's oath to uphold the law and maintain the Church of England, his anointing with holy oil, and his crowning with St Edward's Crown. Queen Camilla was also anointed and crowned during the service. The event incorporated representatives from various faiths, reflecting the diverse communities of the United Kingdom.
Approximately 2,300 guests attended the coronation, including members of the royal family, foreign dignitaries, and representatives from the Commonwealth realms. The ceremony was followed by a procession back to Buckingham Palace, where the King and Queen appeared on the balcony alongside other members of the royal family. The event was broadcast globally, reaching an estimated audience of two billion people across 125 countries.
The coronation's total cost was reported at £72 million, with £50.3 million allocated for staging and £21.7 million for policing. This expenditure was lower than the estimated £162 million spent on Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022. Despite the significant cost, the event was intended to reflect a modern era and provide an economic boost to the United Kingdom.
Celebrations included street parties, a concert at Windsor Castle on 7 May, and a UK-wide volunteering initiative. However, the coronation also prompted protests from republican groups, leading to several arrests on the day. The event was both a significant state occasion and a reflection of contemporary British society.
