The Kramermarkt is a prominent annual fair held in Oldenburg, Germany, typically commencing in late September and concluding in early October. This event is deeply embedded in local tradition, often referred to as the "fifth season" by residents.Established in 1608 by Count Anton Günther, the Kramermarkt began as a marketplace where merchants and travelling traders sold goods following the harvest season. Over time, it transformed into a vibrant fair, incorporating entertainment and attractions. The introduction of carousels in the early 19th century marked the beginning of its evolution into a modern fairground. Due to its growing popularity, the event relocated several times, finally settling at the Weser-Ems-Hallen grounds in 1963. Today, the fair spans approximately 90,000 square metres and attracts up to 1.5 million visitors annually.
The Kramermarkt features a diverse array of attractions, including over 250 stalls and rides ranging from traditional merry-go-rounds to contemporary thrill rides. Visitors can enjoy a variety of culinary delights, from classic German sausages to sweet treats like candied nuts and doughnuts. The fair also hosts three fireworks displays: an opening show on the first Friday, a children's lantern procession on the second Friday, and a grand finale on the closing Sunday.
A highlight of the Kramermarkt is the festive parade held on the first Saturday, showcasing floats, marching bands, and participants in traditional attire. This procession celebrates the fair's rich heritage and fosters community spirit.
