La Liberté guidant le peuple is an oil painting by Eugène Delacroix, completed in 1830.The title translates into English as Liberty Leading the People. Delacroix painted the work shortly after the July Revolution of 1830 in France.
The painting depicts a female figure representing Liberty carrying the French tricolour flag and holding a musket with a bayonet. She is shown advancing over a barricade and is accompanied by figures drawn from different sections of Parisian society. The scene includes armed civilians, a factory worker, a student and a young boy carrying pistols.
The July Revolution took place in Paris between 27 and 29 July 1830 and resulted in the overthrow of King Charles X. Delacroix did not take part in the fighting, but wrote that he had undertaken the painting as a contribution to the events. The work was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1831.
The French government purchased the painting in 1831. It was later removed from public display and kept in storage for periods during the nineteenth century. Since 1874, it has been held in the collection of the Louvre Museum, where it remains on display.
