Scottish Country Dance Instruction

La Merveille De Méaudre (8x32R) 32 bar reel for three couples in a four couple longwise set, Murrough Landon, 2024

1- 4 1st couple, giving right hands, turn one and a quarter times moving down to end on the centre line in 2nd place, 1st man above 1st woman, each facing the opposite side. 2nd couple step up on bars 3-4.
5- 8 1st couple dance out to the opposite side and cast left shoulder around their 2nd corner to end with 1st man facing down between 2nd couple at the top and 1st woman facing up between 3rd couple.
9-12 1st couple change places giving right hands, then cast right shoulder around their 4th corner position to end in 2nd place own sides facing their 3rd corner position.
Meanwhile 2nd and 3rd couples set to their partner, then cross over giving right hands and face out.
13-16 All dance half a reel of three on the sides. 1st couple start by giving left shoulder to their 3rd corner position. 1st couple end facing in. The corners add extra loops to end facing up and down on the sides.
All now repeat the pattern of bars 9-16, rotated by 90 degrees, from new places and with opposite hands and shoulders.
17-20 1st couple cross over giving left hands, then cast left shoulder around their 2nd corner position to end in lines of three across, each facing their 3rd corner position.
Meanwhile 2nd and 3rd couples set facing on the sides, then change places giving left hands on the sides. 2nd couple end facing up at the top, 3rd couple end facing down.
21-24 All dance half a reel of three across. 1st couple start by giving right shoulder to their 3rd corner position. 1st couple end facing down and up on the centre line. The corners add extra loops to end facing their partner.
All are back in the same places as at the end of bar 8.
25-28 1st couple turn once round with the right hand ending on the centre line in 2nd place.
29-32 1st man with 2nd couple, also 1st woman with 3rd couple, each dance left hands across ending on the sides in the order 2,1,3.

This dance is for Sophie Marchand who set up Méaudre Reel, a thriving Scottish Country Dance group in Méaudre which is in the mountainous Vercors Massif near Grenoble.

Murrough presented this dance to Méaudre Reel when he visited in 2024. The dance was added as a surprise to the evening ball programme. Everyone appreciated the number of reels – in all directions - recalling the many bends on the road to Méaudre!

"La Merveille De Méaudre" translates to "The Wonder of Méaudre" in English, where "La Merveille" means "The Wonder" or "The Marvel", and "De Méaudre" refers to Méaudre, a village in France.
