Scottish Country Dance Instruction

LAND OF THE RISING SUN 32 bar Strathspey for 3 couples in a 3 couple longwise set. Wouter Joubert

1 - 4 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples, taking hands on the sides, set, advance one step (to briefly touch joined hands in the center) and retire one step.
5 - 8 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples, pulling back right shoulders, cast and chase clockwise half way round the set. 2nd Couple finish by dancing in to face 3rd corners: 2nd man faces 3rd woman in 1st man's place while 2nd woman faces 1st man in 3rd woman's place.
9 - 12 2nd couple, 3rd woman and 1st man dance half a diagonal reel of four. 2nd Couple pass each other by the right to face 4th corners: 2nd woman faces 3rd man in 1st woman's place while 2nd man faces 1st woman in 3rd man's place.
13 - 16 2nd couple, 3rd man and 1st woman dance half a diagonal reel of four. All three couples are now back in their original starting positions.
17 - 18 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples advance one step to briefly take their partner's right hand at shoulder height and retire one step.
19 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples change places with their partners giving right hands - the women dancing under their partner's right arms - and finish facing each other in the centre of the dance with right hands still joined.
20 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples retire one step to opposite sides.
21 - 24 1st, 2nd and 3rd couples repeat bars 17-20 using left hands.
25 - 28 1st couple, giving nearer hands, dance up and cast into 2nd place.
2nd couple step up on bars 27-28.
31 - 32 1st couple followed by 3rd couple, taking nearer hands, dance up and cast: 1st couple into 3rd place and 3rd couple into 2nd place.

Repeat from new positions.

Devised by Wouter Joubert, 20 March 2011, as a tribute to the brave people of Japan who are rebuilding their lives, their homes and their country after the devastating Earthquake and Tsunami that struck Japan on 11 March 2011.

Suggested dance tune Opposites Attract.

The Japanese names for Japan are Nippon and Nihon. Both Nippon and Nihon literally mean "the sun's origin", that is, where the sun originates, and are often translated as the 'Land of the Rising Sun'.
