Loch Torridon - Scottish Country Dancing Instruction VideoDance Information
Loch Torridon, known in Scottish Gaelic as Loch Thoirbheartan, is a coastal inlet situated on the western shores of Scotland within the expansive Northwest Highlands.Formed by the actions of ancient glaciers, this loch stretches approximately 15 miles (25 km) in length. It comprises two distinct segments: the landward Upper Loch Torridon, located to the east of Rubha na h-Airde Ghlaise, where it connects with Loch Sheildaig; and the primary western expanse, recognized as Loch Torridon proper.
On the southern fringes of the outer Loch, smaller inlets named Loch a' Chracaich and Loch Beag enhance the landscape. The outer Loch Torridon converges with the Inner Sound, positioned between the headlands of Rubha na Fearna to the south and Red Point to the north.
The name Thoirbheartan shares linguistic roots with Tarbert, suggesting a historical association with a location where boats were once transported overland.
