Lochiel's Rant is a Scottish Country Dance published by Rutherford in c. 1756 and interpreted in RSCDS Book 19 in 1957.(Dance information copyright, reproduced here with the kind permission of George Williams)
The traditional Scottish reel Lochiel's Rant is also known by alternative titles such as Lochiel's Awa' to France and Lochiel's Reel.
The tune has appeared in several historic collections, including Niel Gow's Second Collection of Niel Gow's Reels (1788) and William Gunn's The Caledonian Repository of Music Adapted for the Bagpipes (1848), where it is listed under the Gaelic title Mac a Bhodich Ladhrich, meaning The Hoof'd Carle's Son.
Composed in A Dorian mode and traditionally played in a reel time signature, the melody has remained a favourite among fiddlers and pipers, particularly within Scottish and Cape Breton musical traditions. Its appeal is further reflected in its inclusion in the Scots Language Centre's collection of traditional Scottish music.
