Lord Brownlow's Strathspey - Scottish Country Dancing Instruction VideoDance Information
The title, Lord Brownlow's Strathspey, is a reference to the Berkhamsted Strathspey And Reel Club's early meeting place, which was said to be the personal railway waiting room of Adelbert Wellington Cust, 3rd Earl Brownlow (1844–1921).In the 1950s, the club reportedly held Saturday night dances in this unique venue during its formative years.
He inherited Ashridge House and its vast estate near Berkhamsted and lived there with his wife, Countess Adelaide Brownlow.
Adelbert Wellington Brownlow-Cust, 3rd Earl Brownlow (1844–1921), was a British soldier, courtier, and Conservative politician.
Educated at Eton, he inherited the earldom in 1867 following the death of his elder brother.
His political roles included serving under Lord Salisbury as Paymaster General and Under-Secretary of State for War.
He was also Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire for over 50 years and held various honorary military positions.
As a courtier, he served as Volunteer Aide-de-Camp to three monarchs and was appointed GCVO in 1921.
Brownlow married Lady Adelaide Chetwynd-Talbot in 1868; they had no children. After his death, the earldom became extinct.
