Dance Information

This jig, Metro4, was named after The Metro 4 (Officially: M4, South Buda-Rákospalota (DBR) Line, Unofficially: Green Line), the fourth, or green line of Budapest Metro, which opened on 28 March 2014.

Zoltán Gräff, had the idea for the dance after travelling on the new metro line on the first day and getting off at all the 10 stations along the line.

The 10 stations are reflected in the dance consisting of 10-bar phrases, danced to the recommended music, Alan Gardiner and his Scottish Dance Band, The Wee Cooper Of Fife.

Budapest's Metro Line M4, also known as the Green Line, commenced operations on 28 March 2014.

This rapid transit line spans 7.4 kilometres, connecting Kelenföld railway station in the Buda district to Keleti railway station in Pest, traversing beneath the River Danube. The line comprises ten stations: Kelenföld vasútállomás, Bikás park, Újbuda-központ, Móricz Zsigmond körtér, Szent Gellért tér, Fővám tér, Kálvin tér, Rákóczi tér, II. János Pál pápa tér, and Keleti pályaudvar.

Construction of Line M4 began on 23 January 2006 and concluded on 28 March 2014. The tunnels have an internal diameter of 5.2 metres and a standard track gauge of 1,435 millimetres. Station depths vary between 14.5 and 31 metres, with platform lengths of 80 metres. The line operates with 15 four-car Alstom Metropolis trainsets, designed for automatic, driverless operation.

Line M4 employs an automatic train control system, initially operating with onboard attendants during a testing phase. The signalling system supports a maximum of 30 trains per hour, with peak-time intervals of 2 to 3 minutes, and off-peak intervals extending to 5 or 10 minutes. The end-to-end journey time is approximately 13 minutes.

The line incorporates advanced safety measures, including radar-based intrusion detection systems that halt trains if large objects or individuals are detected on the tracks. LED light strips along platforms provide visual cues for approaching trains, aiding passengers with hearing impairments. All stations are equipped with lifts and tactile guidance paths to assist passengers with mobility or visual challenges.

Architectural designs of the stations aim to maximise natural light penetration, with features such as light-conveying equipment and reflective surfaces. Stations utilise fair-faced concrete and artistic wall facings for aesthetic appeal. Ventilation systems maintain air quality and temperature, and are capable of smoke extraction in emergency situations.

The total investment for Line M4 was approximately HUF 452.5 billion, funded by the Hungarian state, the Municipality of Budapest, and the European Union. Future extensions are planned to expand the line eastward to Bosnyák tér and westward to Madárhegy, adding a combined length of 5.3 kilometres and six stations (c. 2025).
