Linda Gaul devised The Diack Dances to honour Mr J Michael Diack of Paterson's Publications Ltd, Glasgow. He had been responsible for introducing the RSCDS founders Miss Jean Milligan and Mrs Isabel Stewart to each other. In 1923 J Michael Diack became a director of the Glasgow music publishing house of Patersons and he compiled many books and sheet music during his time with the company. This notable musician arranged the music for some early RSCDS dance publications published by Patersons and supported the foundation of the RSCDS.
A measure is not only one of the most fundamental units of notation. The word was once used (now archaically) for the step of a dance or even a dance with a well-defined rhythm. It then evolved to be used for stately and solemn dances such as minuets or pavans (more commonly spelt 'pavanes' today).
