Otago Bound - Scottish Country Dancing Instruction VideoDance Information
This dance was devised in honour of Emily Currall to mark the beginning of her time at the University of Otago in March 2014.Established in 1869, the University of Otago is New Zealand's oldest university, located in Dunedin. It is renowned for its dynamic student culture, particularly the tradition of students naming their flats. The term "Scarfie" originated from the common practice of wearing scarves during the chilly southern winters.
The university comprises four academic divisions: Humanities, Health Sciences, Sciences, and the Otago Business School. It operates multiple campuses, with the main one in Dunedin and additional campuses in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Invercargill. The Dunedin campus is celebrated for its architectural beauty and gardens, earning recognition as one of the world's most picturesque university campuses.
Otago offers a variety of residential colleges, primarily accommodating first-year students, though some also house senior undergraduates and postgraduates. These colleges aim to foster community and academic excellence through various activities and traditions.
The university maintains several libraries, including the Central Library, which houses extensive collections and provides numerous study spaces. Other notable libraries are the Robert Stout Law Library, Health Sciences Library, Science Library, and the Hocken Collections, a research library and art gallery of national significance.
In March 2023, the university proposed a new logo and Māori name, Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, as part of its Vision 2040 strategy. Following a consultation process, the University Council approved the changes in July 2023, with the new branding set to be implemented over a 12-month period starting in March 2024.
The University of Otago has a rich history, having trained medical personnel during World War I and being the site of New Zealand's first radio broadcast in 1921. It continues to be a significant contributor to research and education in New Zealand.
