Dance Information

"Peggy's Love" is a Scottish country dance published by Thomas Wilson in his "A Companion to the Ball Room" in London in 1816.

Wilson provided several alternative sets of figures for the dance, including a longer "Double Figure" which appears to have formed the basis of the RSCDS interpretation published in Book 8 in 1932. The RSCDS also records the dance as having been collected in Moray.

Wilson's original tune was written in F major, in 2/4 time, and marked "Allegro". His 1816 publication contained music and instructions for country dances, reels, hornpipes and waltzes, together with guidance on ballroom etiquette.

The tune "Little Peggy's Love", composed by the Scottish fiddler William Marshall (1748–1833), was also published under the title "Lady Louisa Gordon's Strathspey" in 1781. It was subsequently included among the tunes used for "Peggy's Love" in RSCDS Book 8.

A recording of "Peggy's Love" by Jimmy Shand and his Orchestra was released on Parlophone record F.3505 in 1955.
