During a spring work weekend at Pinewoods Camp, a group of volunteers was tasked with covering the footpaths with a large quantity of wood chips. One of the participants, known for his enthusiasm and nicknamed "The Pittsburgh Rake", took on the job of spreading the material.Using a landscape rake, he began by unloading half the contents from a utility cart onto the path. After the cart was moved forward, he spread the remaining load. Once finished, he had a short break while the vehicle returned to collect another batch of wood chips.
Pinewoods Camp is a wooded retreat located in Plymouth, Massachusetts, set between two freshwater ponds. It covers an area of roughly 32 acres and is dedicated to traditional music and dance. The site was originally developed in the early 20th century and later became focused on folk dancing. It has been in continuous seasonal use for dance and music programmes since the 1930s.
The camp operates during the summer, hosting multiple sessions led by various dance organisations. These include weekend and week-long programmes focusing on different styles of folk dance and music. Participants come from across the United States and abroad to take part in workshops and social dancing.
Facilities include four open-air dance pavilions, a dining hall with kitchen, and a central meeting space. Accommodation is provided in simple wooden cabins, most of which are set along shaded paths through the woods. The camp can house around 140 people at a time. Bathhouses and other amenities are shared, and the layout encourages a communal atmosphere.
Much of the original architecture remains, with updates made over the years to improve accessibility and safety while maintaining the camp's traditional style. Pinewoods has played a long-standing role in supporting and preserving folk dance traditions in North America.
