The Rosetown Ball

Scottish Country Dance Instruction

The Rosetown Ball (R4x32) 32 bar Reel for four couples in a longwise set, Eddy West, 1983

1- 4 Second lady with first couple and fourth man with third couple dance half reels of three across the dance. Second lady and first man pass left shoulder to begin, fourth man and third lady pass right. Second lady and fourth man finish in their partner's places.
5- 8 Second man with first couple and fourth lady with third couple dance half reels of three across the dance. Second man and first man pass right shoulder to begin, fourth lady and third lady pass left. Second and fourth couples are now on opposite sides.
9-16 First and second couples and third and fourth couples dance ladies chains finishing facing diagonally across the dance in two groups of four.
17-20 All set advancing diagonally on the first step and retiring on the second, then do a petronella turn to the place of the person on their right. (All ladies cross the set.)
21-24 Repeat bars 17-20. (All men cross the set.)
25-28 First and second couples dance right hands across while third and fourth couples dance left hands across. First lady and third man finish facing out.
29-32 First lady followed by partner dances behind fourth man (who is now in third place) and across the dance to finish on own sides in fourth place, at the same time third man, followed by his partner dances up behind fourth lady and across the dance to finish in second place on own sides.

Repeat from new positions.
(Previous first man and third lady are now fourth man and second lady and continue straight into half reels.)

Dance Information

This dance was devised for the Te Awamutu Scottish Country Dance Club.

Devised in memory of several weekends spent exploring caves with the Te Awamutu SCD Club Ball on the Saturday night as the highlight.

Suggested music: "Duke of Perth", "Ian Powries Farewell to Scotland" or "Baldovan Reel" Frank Reid "Dance Time".
