Round About Hullachan - Scottish Country Dancing Instruction VideoDance Information
Round About Hullachan appears in the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society's Book 5, published in 1929, under the alternative title Hullachan round the Hoose. The dance was collected in Perthshire.Hullachan is an Anglicised form of the Gaelic Ruidhle Thulachain, meaning Reel of Tulloch. The published tune, Round about Hullachan, is an earlier version of the melody also known as The Reel of Tulloch, which appeared in Robert Bremner's collection of Scottish tunes about 1760.
A tradition recorded in later sources states that the Reel of Tulloch originated when parishioners waiting outside a church in the Perthshire village of Tulloch danced together to keep warm while the minister was late. No contemporary evidence has been found to confirm this account, but it remains the best-known explanation for the origin of the name.
