This dance is dedicated to Aya Ito who stayed at the devisers home in 2025.Seppuku, sometimes called "harakiri" outside Japan, was a formal act historically associated with the samurai class of feudal Japan. It developed within the cultural framework of the samurai, where honour, loyalty, and personal responsibility were central values.
In that historical context, the act could be undertaken as a way for a samurai to acknowledge failure, accept responsibility, or make a final gesture intended to restore honour. It was governed by strict traditions and ceremonial customs that reflected the disciplined culture of the warrior class.
The practice existed for many centuries but disappeared as Japan modernised during the late nineteenth century. Following the political reforms of the Meiji Restoration, the samurai class was abolished and the old customs connected with it came to an end.
Today seppuku is mainly discussed as part of Japanese history and cultural study. References to it in literature, theatre, and historical writing reflect the importance once placed on honour and accountability within samurai society. The dance title "Seppuku Sweet Apology", uses the historical idea symbolically, suggesting a graceful or heartfelt gesture of apology rather than referring to the historical practice itself.
