The Shinkansen constitutes a network of high-speed railway lines in Japan, with its name, Shinkansen, translating to 'new trunk line,' primarily referencing the tracks. However, both within and outside Japan, the term is commonly used to denote not only the railway tracks but also the trains and the entire system. The original Tōkaidō Shinkansen, which connects three of Japan's major cities - Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka, is one of the world's busiest high-speed rail lines. In the year leading up to March 2017, it accommodated a staggering 159 million passengers. Remarkably, over its operational span of more than five decades, the line has transported over 5.6 billion passengers without a single fatality or injury attributed to train accidents.
Distinguishing itself, the service on this line operates larger trains and at a higher frequency compared to most other high-speed rail lines globally. During peak times, the line facilitates up to thirteen trains per hour in each direction, each comprising sixteen cars with a total seating capacity of 1,323 passengers, occasionally accommodating additional standing passengers. The minimum headway between trains is maintained at three minutes.
